Cartagena old town at golden hour

Cartagena

A walled city that keeps its own time — heat, plazas, music drifting after dark.

Waarom gaan

Wat deze plek de reis waard maakt.

Cartagena holds five centuries inside one set of walls. Mornings move slowly through the cobbled lanes of the Centro Histórico, the heat held off by balconies thick with bougainvillea. Afternoons drift toward Getsemaní, where the music starts early and the plazas fill at dusk. By night the old city becomes a single long room — candlelit kitchens, salsa from the corners, the sea pressing in at the edges. Beyond the walls, the Caribbean opens onto Barú and the Rosario islands, twenty minutes from the noise. People come to walk it, eat through it, and stay longer than they planned.

Reisgids

Wat je wilt weten voordat je gaat.

Beste reistijd

December through April is dry and warm — the high season, with everything open and the old city at its busiest. September and October are the quietest months, with short afternoon rain and the lowest rates. May, June and November sit in between: warm, alive, and far less crowded.

Sfeer

Cartagena is unhurried in the morning and slowly lights up through the day. Mornings are for the Centro and its cafés; afternoons for the museums or the pool; evenings for Getsemaní. The city stays late — most kitchens are still serving at 11pm.

Eten

The cooking is Caribbean Colombian: ceviche, posta negra, coconut rice, plantain. The serious end runs through Celele, Carmen, Alma and Interno; the everyday end through Plaza Trinidad, the market kitchens and the corner spots in San Diego.

Stranden en kust

The city beaches at Bocagrande are not why you come. For sand and water, take a boat: Barú (45 minutes), the Rosario Islands (1 hour), or a private cay for the day. Most stays will arrange it.

Veiligheid

The Centro, San Diego and Getsemaní are calm, walkable and well-patrolled day and night. Take normal big-city care — registered taxis or rideshare after dark, no phones out in unfamiliar barrios. Tap water is not drinkable; bottled is standard.

Lokale tips

  • Stay inside the walls (Centro or San Diego) for your first nights — the whole city is on foot from there.
  • Book Celele and Carmen at least a week ahead in high season.
  • Do the Rosario day with a private operator, not a public ferry — the difference is significant.
  • Cash (Colombian pesos) is useful for street food, taxis and small shops. Cards work everywhere serious.
  • The Cartagena airport (CTG) is fifteen minutes from the old city — most hotels arrange the transfer.
