San Diego, Cartagena
The quieter corner inside the walls — residential, heritage, a short walk from everything.
About San Diego
A sense of place.
San Diego is the northern quarter of Cartagena's walled city, and the one people tend to find on their second visit. Where the Centro Histórico fills with carriages and tour groups by mid-morning, San Diego stays residential: shuttered houses, a plaza with trees, neighbours who know each other. The walls are five minutes away on foot, and so is everything inside them.
The quarter's heritage hotels are mostly restored Republican-era houses — a courtyard at the centre, rooms opening onto it, a terrace above the tiled roofs. Buildings of that age rarely have lifts, which is worth knowing before you book a room on the third floor.
Plaza Fernández Madrid is the quarter's centre of gravity: a small tree-shaded square with cafés on its edges, quiet in the afternoon heat and busier once the light softens. It is the kind of place you end up crossing several times a day without planning to.

Check which floor your room is on
San Diego's heritage houses are protected buildings, so lifts are rare. Ask before booking if stairs are a problem.
